Humpback whale swims gracefully underwater

The Body Guards of the Ocean

PriceFrom $50.00

A Humpback Whale shows off the size of its pectoral fin while curiously observing  some freedivers. They are one of the few species that will protect another species (dolphins, seals, other whale species) from Orca attacks despite no obvious benefit to themselves. This is one of few examples of 'Interspecific altruism' in the animal kingdom. A variety of theories exist for why they might do this. They could be responding to the Killer Whales vocal noises during an attack assuming they are predating on fellow Humpbacks. They investigate with the intention of protecting their own species, However, when they arrive to find other marine mammals under attack (dolphins, sea lions, other whale species) they attempt to protect them due to their despise of their main predator 'the Orca'. There has also been recordings of Humpback Whales protecting Humans from Sharks.
