White sandy beaches, aqua blue waters and orange lichen encrusted granite boulders providing incredible natural contrast. Lichen is actually a combination of 2 species. A fungus which combines with either an algae or cyanobacteria. Together forming a symbiotic relationship. The fungus benefits by receiving food which is produced via photosynthesis from the algae. The algae benefits as the fungus can retain water and provide protection and an anchor point for the lichen. We benefit from the incredible view it provides. Different types of lichen are different colours. This particular lichen gains its bright orange appearance from the pigment carotenoid which protects the lichen from UV radiation.
