A Vertical trench in tropical waters promoting a rainbow of colourful corals and sponges. Due to restricted light availability for photosynthesis in the trench, soft corals which filter feed on small phytoplankton which get swept passed them thrive. These soft corals develop structural forms to increase their surface area (like fans, whips and tree like structures) and hence be able to catch more food.
