Mountains soaring near vertically from the ocean over 1000m high, carved out from the abundance of waterfalls. The extreme amount of rainfall this area receives causes a unique natural phenomenon. A layer of dark fresh water coloured from the tanins from the mountainous vegetation permanently settles above the ocean water. This dark fresh water limits light availability to the ocean water below simulating a deep sea environment. Because of this many species only found in the ocean depths can be found as shallow as 10m deep. Black coral a type of deep sea soft coral is abundant in shallow waters here.
